RATIOS - ASPECT RATIO
Aspect ratio is the relationship of the width of an image to its height, of its horizontal to vertical dimensions.
Some digital cameras let you select an aspect ratio that matches standard print sizes, such as 6"x4" (3:2 ratio).
Some digital cameras default to different ratios, the most common other than 3:2 is 4:3.
For files not shot in a 3:2 ratio, care must be taken to get the desired aspect ratio with editing software as
any photos will need to be in the same ratio as the print selected or WHITE EDGES WILL APPEAR ON YOUR FINISHED PRINTS.
If selecting a border on your print and you don't have the correct ratio, those prints will have an odd sized border on some sides.
* If you wish to print say an 14"x11", you would need to place the 14:11 ratio print on an 18:12 (ie:3:2) ratio canvas.
TYPE OF PAPER & FINISH
We print on Real Photographic Paper using RA-4 processing.
Our main paper is Lustre Paper.
It is a finish between Matte and Gloss, it has a medium sheen to it and is more resistant to fingerprints.
The Photographic paper we use gives outstanding sharpness, true colour reproduction, pure whites & neutral tone gradation.
It is also extremely resistant to scratches, pressure marks ansd static & has excellent image stability.
FILE SIZES / Types & Workflow
Send your files saved in JPEG Format ONLY.
Ensure that the colour space is saved in sRGB.
*Files embedded with Adobe 1998 colour space will result in flat and muddy looking prints.*
Feel free to compress your files at “good” quality.
You do not need to resize any of your files out of your photo program if you do not wish to.
Check your File Manager to ensure your JPEGs are compressed to under 5MB.
You will not see any degradation in your print until your file reaches below 200 dpi at the size print you need.
You can achieve beautiful looking 18"x12" enlargements from files of approximately 1-2MB in size.
For the most efficient workflow, we suggest that your files not be over 3MB each.
Please note that our Photographic Printing Machine can make very nice 12"x8" or 12"x18" enlargements from a 2MB file.
For maximum workflow we suggest that your files not be over 3MB each. (This line has been repeated deliberately :)
Errors might occur with your Internet Provider in transmission due to sending too many large files in one hit.
If you have heaps of files, feel free to send your order through in small lots of say 50-100 - We will refund postage on multiple orders.
Please note that our Photographic Printing Machine can make very nice 8"x12" or 18"x12" enlargements from a 2MB file.
For maximum workflow we suggest that your files not be over 3MB each. (This line has been repeated deliberately :)
BORDERS We recommend a 4mm white border if your prints are to be framed or if you are not sure about the ratio.
BLEEDING
Please note: The D-Lab will crop 2% from the outer edge of the image through 'bleeding'.
If you do not wish to lose any of the image, please specify 'Borders' on your scrapbook prints and this will print a 4mm white border (or other colour if you wish) or allow a 2% bleed and don’t have any text near the edges.
COLOUR SPACE / PROFILE
Depending on the program you use, is it essential that you set the colour profile to sRGB.
Do NOT send them in Adobe1998 because someone said to output them this way because "it’s a bigger colour space".
Yes it is a bigger colour space but it’s the wrong colour space, so please use just good old sRGB.
I CAN'T USE THE UPLOADER
Make sure your browser allows Java software to run.
Check the settings or download the latest version of Java.
You can get it here. www.java.com
You should be prompted as the java applet begins, click on run.
Feel free to tick the "Always Trust" box if you are going to use us a lot.
When starting the upload process, a dialog box will ask if it is ok to run the Java Uploading applet.
You will need to press Yes for this to work successfully.
